What is a 9H ceramic nano coating and how does it work?
‘Ceramic’ or ‘nano-ceramic’ refers to nano-particles. These nano-particles form the structure of the ceramic coating. Each coating has unique characteristics and requires a specific application. When applied, the nano particles bond with the paint clear coat and become part of the surface.
Simply said, a thin layer you put on your bicycle, you won’t see and it protects your frame against mud, dirt, chemicals, sweat, salt, water, snow, UV, etc.
Ten years ago, Boeing began studies on the properties of ceramic coatings. The result: Boeing had to clean their airplanes every 26 weeks instead of every 6 weeks. The self-cleaning effect was Boeing’s main reason to apply these coatings to their aircraft's. Bugs and dirt build up on an airplane, make it less aerodynamic thus potentially consuming higher amounts of fuel.
Fast forward to the bicycle industry…
- 9H stands for the max hardness of a standardized pensil test. 3H= paint / clearcoat. So it’s 3x as hard as your bicycle paint job.
- Ceramic is not the same hardness, but similar. Like your ceramic frying pan. Nothing sticks to it and it lasts long.
- Nano is so small it smoothens the pores of the paint and bonds with it. It becomes ONE with your bike and doesn’t come off.

Some ceramic coatings are truly permanent and meant for a lifetime. But they are heavier and often extremely difficult to apply. When mistakes are made, wet sanding to correct them seems excessive.
Short term basic protection sprays and 3H-6H coatings, that you can try at home, but don’t offer the durability that bicycles need. Coatings with very short curing times and/or buffing times are not ideal for the bicycle industry.
Coatings from the car industry are protecting up to 12ph and don’t hold up well against abrasion. This is an important factor for our sport.
Bicycles maintenance products are sometimes close to 10-11ph. Dawn soap is already 9.5ph, imagine the degreasers you use. But when you take a ride and your frame is introduced to limestone mud or your own tire sealant, The ph level can rise above 12ph. Then we are not even talking about the factor of sweat. Car coatings fail a lot of times under sweaty conditions.
